Billabong was started in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant. The husband and wife team used to sew and seal knee length board shorts together at their rented apartment on the Gold Coast of Australia. Their immediate success persuaded the couple to give a name to their product and that is where 'Billabong' was born as it is an aboriginal term often used to mean an 'Oasis'.

As surfing developed through the 70's and 80's Billabong used it's expertise and knowledge to promote surfing events and individuals.

Today Billabong is regarded as one of the top 3 surf brands in the world and the brand continues to promote and sponsor rising talent in all areas of board sports.
